CUP Sets Conditions for Future Governance
Laure Vega, the CUP’s newly confirmed candidate for mayor of Barcelona, has stated unequivocally that her party will not facilitate a continued Socialist Party (PSC) administration after the 2027 municipal elections. In an interview with VilaWeb published on Sunday 27 September 2026, Vega asserted that her party is "not responsible" for enabling the PSC to remain in government, blaming current leadership under Mayor Jaume Collboni for worsening housing and living conditions. Vega, a sitting MP in the Catalan Parliament who was ratified as lead candidate by CUP and Comunistes de Catalunya assemblies this month, said the goal is to win enough seats to remove Collboni from office and prevent a right-wing alternative from taking power. She pointed to the CUP’s participation in governance in Girona as a model for what could be possible in Barcelona if election results allow.

Housing, Cost of Living and Language Central to Platform
The core of the CUP’s municipal platform will focus on housing access, the rising cost of living, and tourism policy, issues Vega linked to the so-called "Barcelona brand" model. She argued that residents must be able to stay in the city and that those who have been forced to leave should have a path to return. On day one of any future CUP-led administration, Vega pledged strict enforcement of existing regulations, including rent price caps and fines related to linguistic rights violations, such as businesses failing to provide service in Catalan. She stressed that the priority is not new legislation but ensuring current rules are applied.
Shift in Public Opinion on Radical Policies
Vega noted a significant shift in public reception toward policies once considered radical. Measures like limiting property ownership per individual and curbing real estate speculation, which she said were dismissed as extreme years ago, now enjoy "very high" levels of public support. The CUP lost its municipal representation in Barcelona in 2019 and failed to regain it in 2023. Vega acknowledged past alienation from social and neighbourhood movements but described a recent "process of opening" that has rebuilt trust ahead of the 2027 campaign. She replaced Basha Changue, who led the 2023 list. The party now positions itself as an anti-fascist, broad-based project aiming to unite activists, social organisations, and grassroots movements.
PSC Reacts Positively to Candidacy
Despite the CUP’s refusal to back a PSC-led government, the Socialist party welcomed Vega’s nomination. In statements reported by ARA earlier in September, the PSC called her appointment an "excellent decision" and expressed openness to reaching agreements with her on specific policy issues, particularly around housing.
