Cornellà de Llobregat's Guàrdia Urbana, the local police force, is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a series of commemorative events throughout the year, culminating in October. The celebrations began on 17 May with a public festival held at the junction of Carretera d'Esplugues and Plaça de l’Església.
The event featured games and workshops for families, alongside a display of equipment and services from the Guàrdia Urbana and other security forces. This provided an opportunity for residents to meet the professionals who work 24 hours a day to protect public order, regulate traffic, and carry out administrative duties related to citizen safety.
A Century of Local Policing
Officials said the centenary and associated activities aim to explain the force's service to the community. It also pays tribute to the many individuals who have served in the municipal police force over the past century, often without sufficient recognition. The Guàrdia Urbana of Cornellà was formally established by a plenary resolution in August 1926.
From its initial two officers, the force has grown to more than 120 personnel today. It has become an essential service for ensuring the safety and coexistence of Cornellà's citizens, and for supporting countless daily activities, according to local authorities.
Public Engagement and Future Steps
The 'Proximity and Security Exhibition' on 17 May included displays of vehicles and resources from the Guàrdia Urbana, Mossos d'Esquadra, Guàrdia Civil, and Policia Nacional. Children's activities featured an adventure circuit, archery, and a mountain bike circuit.
Moving forward, the year-long programme of events will continue to highlight the force's evolution and its ongoing commitment to public service. The celebrations are designed to strengthen the bond between the police and the community, fostering a greater understanding of their work.
