Cornellà de Llobregat has approved initial urban plans to turn the former Eroski supermarket and Siemens industrial sites into a new neighbourhood with 335 homes, green space and a large pedestrian walkway.
The project covers a 34,000 square metre area next to Llobregat Centre, according to the initial information approved by Cornellà Council. It includes five buildings of different heights, new public spaces and a strong focus on protected housing.
More than 40% of the future homes will be protected, with options for both rental and purchase. The council also plans a dedicated block for protected rental housing for Cornellà residents.
The rental block will be separated from the other homes by a large central green area. The council says the aim is to create a natural corridor that links neighbourhoods and avoids the closed-in feel often seen in new developments. For more local planning coverage, see our news page.
The scheme is described as a new centrality area for the city, based on the initial reorganisation document and the specific modification of the General Metropolitan Plan for the Can Trabal area. The council says the goal is not only to build homes, but also to add facilities, services and new urban connections at one of Cornellà's strategic entrances.
The design also includes sustainability and mobility criteria, with more sustainable transport systems, better urban connectivity and a plan based on energy self-sufficiency and environmental preservation. The buildings are set out in a staggered layout to avoid a continuous urban wall and to leave more open space and vegetation.
The project still needs final approval and must complete the full administrative and urban planning process before construction can begin. The council said in the initial documentation that work could take four to five years. The first plans, however, give a clear picture of how one of Cornellà's last large urban voids may change.
