Manresa's Teatre Kursaal is hosting the latest edition of Cantània this week, an educational music project from Barcelona's L'Auditori. A total of 1,757 primary school students from 49 schools across Central Catalonia are taking part. Concerts will run from Monday to Friday in the theatre's main hall, with seven performances scheduled.
This marks the 18th consecutive year for the project in Manresa, establishing it as a significant educational music experience in the region. Schools from Bages, Moianès, Anoia, Berguedà, and Vallès Occidental are participating.
Seven Concerts Throughout the Week
The cantata, titled 'L'últim rellotge' (The Last Clock), will be performed Monday to Wednesday at 7pm. On Thursday and Friday, there will be two daily sessions, at 5pm and 8:30pm.
This year's production features music by Jordi Cornudella Heras and dramaturgy by Tina Vallès. The story follows the Clock Seller, who arrives in the mysterious Village of After with her final clock to sell. There, she meets Enigma, a character who listens as she recalls the villages she has visited throughout her life. As the story unfolds, the protagonist discovers the meaning of time and what truly makes her happy.
The show combines the students' voices with live music from an eight-member band and two professional soloists.
A Strong Educational Project
Cantània is an activity for primary school students that schools work on for months. Music teachers attend specific training sessions and then prepare the repertoire with their students in the classroom. Each school receives musical materials and recordings six months in advance to rehearse the songs and staging.
The project aims to offer children a collective, large-scale artistic experience, allowing them to engage with music from within and participate in a professional show. Officials from the Kursaal say Cantània has become an "important and unforgettable" experience for thousands of students over the years. This is thanks to its blend of teaching, live performance, and choral participation.
Kursaal's Educational Commitment
Cantània is one of five major educational projects promoted by Manresa's Teatre Kursaal, designed for students from I2 (two-year-olds) up to the fourth year of ESO (secondary education). The initiative strengthens the link between culture and education, confirming the Kursaal as a key venue for artistic and musical training in Central Catalonia.
