Barcelona City Council has confirmed its intention to significantly reduce the number of plane trees across the city over the next decade, opting instead for species more resistant to high temperatures. This strategy aims to diversify Barcelona's urban tree population.
Officials clarified that this is not a mass felling programme. Instead, the council will replace plane trees as they die naturally or during major urban remodelling projects. In the last 15 years, the percentage of plane trees in Barcelona has only decreased by 3%, according to the council.
Diversifying Urban Greenery
There is no single ideal plant for the city, officials stated. The key is to diversify both the species planted and the locations where they are placed. This approach requires a multidisciplinary strategy, incorporating the views of various experts. Public health considerations, such as allergy risks, are also being taken into account.
This long-term plan reflects a growing concern over climate change impacts on urban environments. By selecting trees better suited to warmer conditions, Barcelona aims to create a more resilient and sustainable urban forest for its residents.
