Former Spanish Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos clashed with commissioner Víctor de Aldama from the start of his testimony at the Supreme Court in Madrid yesterday. Ábalos denied the existence of any donations and defended his management of mask contracts.

He began by accusing commissioner Víctor de Aldama of a need for "permanent imposture". This included a letter supposedly sent to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, in which Ábalos was said to have appointed De Aldama as a Spanish government liaison. Ábalos denied writing or signing this letter.

Ábalos attributed the theft of official paper and the seal used to create the letter to De Aldama. The former minister maintained his innocence regarding any alleged illicit payments related to the procurement of medical supplies during the pandemic.
